Kitchen Addition Project

Custom kitchen addition | Historic Home Remodel | Historic Preservation Award Winner

1305 9th Street, Alameda, CA

The scope of design and additions to the 1305 9th Street project was two-fold. My wonderful real estate agent client saw the vision in buying this home for herself that had not been updated since the 1950s and restoring this unique 1910 East Lake Craftsman home back to its original glory… and more.

She asked me to walk through the home with her even before she closed on it to get ideas and inspiration together.

We approached the design to save every historic element possible: all the doors, hardware, picture rails and baseboards. We re-purposed everything. We also restored the entire front porch back to its original details with a hand crafted balustrade and newel posts to the match existing architecture.

The city of Alameda awarded the home owner and myself with a 2020 Historic Preservation Award.

The second part of the client’s wish list was to add a huge, light-filled French country kitchen across the entire back of the house overlooking a 100 year old oak tree. The kitchen addition was designed and built simultaneously under one permit. I carefully connected and pulled the new addition into the historic home inside and out by working with the city historian and studying all the craftsman details from the front façade and entry hall to incorporate throughout. We were also able to add a new interior staircase down to a full lower level art studio for the client’s second career and art collection.
